Our Priorities

At Status of Women, the future we envision includes healthy relationships and equity, structures and systems that connect and support people, and communities where healing and well-being are prioritized. We respect that organizations and individuals working in community understand the needs, barriers, and solutions to preventing gender-based violence and supporting those experiencing it.

The Status of Women Office advances its vision of gender equality in Nova Scotia by:

  • Ensuring that women and their children are safe from gender-based violence;
  • Improving women’s economic security; and
  • Encouraging women to participate in politics and leadership roles.

The Office’s priorities include:

  • Building and maintaining collaborative relationships internally and externally on priority areas including safety, gender-based violence, economic security, leadership, and community partnerships.
  • Administering government’s operational funding of Transition Houses, Women’s Centres, Alice House, and the Nova Scotia Native Women’s Association, including an increase of $7M for 2024-25.
  • Leading government’s coordinated response on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, including engagement with the Mi’kmaq and Indigenous women leaders.
  • Leading Standing Together, Nova Scotia’s coordinated approach to preventing domestic violence, and the Canada-Nova Scotia Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence.
  • Supporting women’s economic security and leadership through bursaries, grants, and Campaign Schools for Women.

We encourage you to apply for our Advisory Council through the Agencies, Boards, and Commissions website. Members connect with others across the province to discuss concerns affecting their communities.
